Category: Power and Environmental Monitoring

Description: Manages UPS power management system status, load, battery health, and bypass modes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is UPSMAN?

UPSMAN is a vendor UPS (uninterruptible power supply) management MIB exposing the core status of a UPS unit, closely paralleling the structure of the standard IETF UPS-MIB (RFC 1628). It reports identity information (model name, UPS ID), battery health metrics, input line conditions, and output load/status, giving a full picture of the power protection subsystem. Its monitoring purpose is explicitly hardware status: battery capacity, voltage, temperature and remaining runtime/lifetime indicate battery health and imminent depletion, while input line voltage/frequency and output load/status reveal whether the UPS is on utility power, on battery, or overloaded/in bypass. It functions as a vendor-specific analog to the standard UPS-MIB rather than depending on it directly. It is typically deployed in data centers and network closets to give NMS platforms early warning of power events and battery degradation before a UPS-protected outage occurs. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the UPSMAN file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in UPSMAN. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) unit

Monitoring Examples

An operator can poll upsBatteryStatus and upsBatteryCapacity together with upsBatteryRunTimeRemaining to determine whether the UPS battery is healthy and how much runtime is left during a power event. upsInputLineVoltage and upsInputLineFrequence show whether utility power is within normal range, while upsOutputStatus and upsOutputLoad reveal if the UPS has switched to battery or bypass mode and how heavily loaded the output is. A rising upsBatteryTemperature combined with a falling upsBatteryLifeTimeRemaining is a classic early sign of battery degradation requiring replacement before the next outage.

What Can Be Monitored

  • battery status and capacity
  • battery voltage and temperature
  • runtime/lifetime remaining
  • input line voltage/frequency

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using upsBatteryLifeTimeRemaining OID:

Select an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) unit (battery capacity/input-line/output-load status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type upsBatteryLifeTimeRemaining into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the forecast of the battery lifetime, replacement recommended in x month. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the forecasted months remaining drops to 3 or fewer, since that means the battery is approaching the end of its service life and replacement should be scheduled. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
