Category: Power and Environmental Monitoring

Description: Monitors Emerson ESNA energy system rectifiers, batteries, and alarms for version 5.9 controllers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VEC-MIBv5-9?

VEC-MIBv5-9 is Emerson Energy Systems North America's (ESNA) enterprise MIB, version 5.9, for its VEC family of DC power plant controllers used in telecom and networking sites. It centers on trap definitions for Power Conversion Unit (PCU) summaries and shunt monitoring, covering the fault/alarm category of data for rectifier-based DC power systems. Its primary monitoring value is hardware status: it reports rectifier/PCU alarm conditions and shunt (current-sense) alarms, letting facility staff detect a failed or degraded rectifier module, battery-string shunt fault, or other power-plant hardware issue before it causes a site power outage. As an Emerson proprietary enterprise MIB it has no dependency on IETF standard MIBs beyond the base SNMPv2-TRAP conventions. It's deployed on Emerson/Vertiv VEC-series DC power plants powering telecom central offices, cell sites, and data center DC racks. Engineers can download the VEC-MIBv5-9 file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VEC-MIBv5-9. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Emerson/Vertiv ESNA VEC DC power plant controller

Monitoring Examples

A monitoring system would trap on psPCUSummaryTraps/psPCUNodeTypeTraps to be alerted the moment a rectifier module (PCU) reports a summary alarm, and on psShuntTraps to catch an over-current or shunt-sensor fault on a battery string. Because the MIB is trap-centric, an NMS typically also polls a companion node-level object (outside these samples) to correlate the trap with which physical PCU or shunt failed. Frequent psPCUTraps from the same node ID would suggest a specific rectifier is intermittently failing and needs replacement.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PCU (rectifier) summary alarms
  • PCU node-type alarms
  • shunt (battery string current) alarms
  • power system trap events

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using vecMessageRequests OID:

Select an Emerson/Vertiv ESNA VEC DC power plant controller (rectifier/PCU/shunt alarm status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type vecMessageRequests into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the total number of message requests. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the count changes from its expected baseline, since that would indicate the underlying set of items changed unexpectedly. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
