Description: Nokia Tropic experimental MIB enumerating optical line-card types — OSC, amplifier, transponder, and mux cards — for WDM optical transport platforms

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TROPIC-EXPROPTICALCARD?

TROPIC-EXPROPTICALCARD is an experimental Nokia Tropic Networks MIB module that enumerates the types of optical line cards supported on Tropic's WDM/DWDM optical transport platforms, including optical supervisory channel (OSC) cards, optical amplifier cards, transponder cards, and multiplexer/demultiplexer cards. As an experimental type-enumeration module, it primarily provides classification/inventory data (what kind of card occupies a given slot) rather than deep runtime counters. Its monitoring value lies chiefly in hardware inventory and identification: it lets management systems recognize and correctly interpret the card type present in each chassis slot, which underpins the accuracy of related hardware-health monitoring performed by companion Tropic MIBs (fan, control card, statistics). It is closely tied to other Tropic MIB modules that report the actual operational/alarm state and performance data for cards of each enumerated type. It is used in carrier optical transport (DWDM) networks where a chassis can be populated with a mix of amplifier, transponder, OSC, and mux/demux line cards. Engineers can download the TROPIC-EXPROPTICALCARD file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TROPIC-EXPROPTICALCARD. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nokia (Tropic Networks) DWDM optical transport chassis

Monitoring Examples

This experimental module defines the enumerated optical-card-type values (OSC, amplifier, transponder, mux/demux) used to classify each line card in a chassis slot; no sample objects were supplied, and given its "experimental" MODULE-IDENTITY status, it likely serves as a type/enumeration reference consumed by other Tropic hardware-inventory MIBs rather than exposing its own runtime counters.

What Can Be Monitored

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using tnExprWaveKeyEncodeEstimatedInPower OID:

Select a Nokia (Tropic Networks) DWDM optical transport chassis (optical line-card type inventory status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type tnExprWaveKeyEncodeEstimatedInPower into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The estimated optical input power for this wavelength key encoder. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value drifts significantly from its normal baseline, since an unexpected change often points to a real underlying issue. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
