Description: Manages Transition Networks device thermal protection thresholds, sensor readings, and shutdown actions.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is TN-THERMAL-PROTECTION-MIB?
TN-THERMAL-PROTECTION-MIB is a Transition Networks module for managing per-port thermal protection on their media-converter and Ethernet switching hardware. It exposes configuration for temperature thresholds and priority levels per port, together with live status data reporting measured port temperature and a resulting protection status/shutdown code. Its primary purpose is hardware health monitoring - it directly reports temperature readings and protective-action status codes per interface, letting an operator see whether a port has been throttled or shut down due to overheating, a hardware/environmental fault condition. It builds on the standard ifIndex convention to associate thermal data with physical interfaces, and is Transition Networks vendor-specific rather than a general IETF standard. It is typically deployed on Transition Networks industrial or hardened Ethernet switches/media converters installed in environments prone to temperature extremes such as outdoor cabinets or industrial floors, where a TN-THERMAL-PROTECTION-MIB download helps operators catch an overheating port before it is throttled or shut down.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TN-THERMAL-PROTECTION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Transition Networks managed Ethernet switch
- Transition Networks industrial media converter
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll tnThermalProtectionIfStatusTable (tnThermalProtectionIfStatusEntry) to read tnThermalProtectionIfStatusTemperature and tnThermalProtectionIfStatusCode per port, comparing them against the configured tnThermalProtectionPriorityTemperature thresholds in tnThermalProtectionPriorityTable. A rising tnThermalProtectionIfStatusTemperature approaching or exceeding the configured threshold, paired with a non-normal tnThermalProtectionIfStatusCode, indicates an overheating port that may be automatically disabled to protect the hardware; tnThermalProtectionMIBNotifications would trap on such a protection/shutdown event.
What Can Be Monitored
- per-port temperature reading
- thermal protection status code
- configured temperature threshold per priority level
- port shutdown/protection events
