What Is TIMETRA-ELMI-MIB?

TIMETRA-ELMI-MIB is an Alcatel-Lucent (now Nokia) MIB (timetraSRMIBModules 68) for managing and provisioning Ethernet Local Management Interface (E-LMI) on the 7x50 Service Router product family's Ethernet ports. Its tmnxElmiIfConfigTable, which AUGMENTS the existing tmnxPortEtherEntry row for each configured port, exposes tmnxElmiIfCfgMode (none, uniN, or uniC — disabling E-LMI or setting the port as a UNI-N/UNI-C peer), tmnxElmiIfCfgStatus (up/down based on whether the configured consecutive-error threshold tmnxElmiIfCfgN393 has been exceeded), the UNI-C polling timer tmnxElmiIfCfgT391 and UNI-N polling-verification timer tmnxElmiIfCfgT392, and tmnxElmiIfCfgUniType/tmnxElmiIfCfgUniIdentifier describing the negotiated UNI service-multiplexing type and its identifier string. A companion tmnxElmiIfConfigTableLastChanged timestamp tracks when any row last changed. Monitoring this MIB reveals whether the E-LMI control channel between a customer edge device and the network is up, which is essential for diagnosing Ethernet service provisioning mismatches at the UNI. It depends on TIMETRA-PORT-MIB for the underlying Ethernet port entry it augments and on TIMETRA-CHASSIS-MIB/TIMETRA-GLOBAL-MIB for chassis and module indexing. Anyone operating 7x50 SR Ethernet services can find a TIMETRA-ELMI-MIB download to monitor E-LMI status per port.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TIMETRA-ELMI-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Alcatel-Lucent (Nokia) 7x50 Service Router family

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls tmnxElmiIfCfgStatus for a UNI-C port to confirm E-LMI is up, cross-checking tmnxElmiIfCfgN393 against recent polling failures; a status of down together with a T391/T392 polling timer mismatch between the customer and network sides would indicate the E-LMI session has exceeded its consecutive-error threshold due to misaligned polling intervals.

What Can Be Monitored

  • E-LMI mode per port (none/UNI-N/UNI-C)
  • E-LMI operational status (up/down)
  • consecutive-error threshold configuration
  • UNI-C/UNI-N polling and verification timers
  • negotiated UNI service-multiplexing type
  • configuration table last-changed timestamp

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using tmnxElmiStatRxStatusEnqMsgs OID:

Select an Alcatel-Lucent (Nokia) 7x50 Service Router family (E-LMI control-channel status per Ethernet port) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type tmnxElmiStatRxStatusEnqMsgs into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The value of tmnxElmiStatRxStatusEnqMsgs indicates the number of ELMI Status Enquiry messages received on this Ethernet interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in messages), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
