Description: Defines managed objects for Fibre Channel Virtual Fabrics, managing the relationship between Core Switches and Virtual Switches.
IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring T11-FC-VIRTUAL-FABRIC-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.
What Is T11-FC-VIRTUAL-FABRIC-MIB?
T11-FC-VIRTUAL-FABRIC-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based IETF MIB (RFC 4747, from the T11 Fibre Channel committee) for managing Virtual Fabrics, a Fibre Channel feature that partitions a physical switch fabric into multiple logically isolated fabrics. It exposes a t11vfCoreSwitchTable describing the physical core switch and its virtual-fabric capacity, a t11vfVirtualSwitchTable mapping each virtual fabric (by VfId) to its core switch with a row-status-controlled lifecycle, and a t11vfPortTable assigning physical ports to virtual switches. Its monitoring focus is configuration and topology state: confirming how many virtual fabrics a core switch supports versus how many are configured, whether a virtual switch's row is active, and which ports belong to which virtual fabric, useful for detecting misconfigured or orphaned virtual fabric assignments rather than hardware sensor faults. It is explicitly defined per the FC-SW/Virtual Fabric standard and is designed to be used alongside other T11 Fibre Channel fabric-element MIBs. It is deployed in multi-tenant or segmented SAN environments where Fibre Channel switches/directors support Virtual Fabric partitioning. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the T11-FC-VIRTUAL-FABRIC-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in T11-FC-VIRTUAL-FABRIC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (IETF RFC 4747 / T11 FC-SW)
- Fibre Channel switches/directors supporting Virtual Fabrics
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll t11vfCoreSwitchTable to check t11vfCoreSwitchMaxSupported against the number of entries in t11vfVirtualSwitchTable to confirm a physical switch hasn't exceeded its virtual fabric capacity. Checking t11vfVirtualSwitchEntry's t11vfVirtualSwitchRowStatus for each t11vfVirtualSwitchVfId confirms whether a given virtual fabric is active or was left in a notReady/notInService state after a failed provisioning attempt. Cross-referencing t11vfPortTable reveals which physical ports are mapped to which virtual switch, useful for auditing a port that unexpectedly ended up in the wrong virtual fabric.
What Can Be Monitored
- virtual fabric capacity vs. configured count
- virtual switch row/provisioning status
- core switch to virtual switch mapping
- port-to-virtual-fabric assignment
