Category: Switch Management - D-Link

Description: Manages Layer 2 switch functions including MAC learning, VLANs, and spanning tree per D-Link platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SWL2MGMT-MIB?

SWL2MGMT-MIB is a D-Link proprietary module defining Layer 2 network management structure for D-Link switch platforms, covering MAC address learning, VLAN configuration, and spanning tree operation. It exposes configuration data (VLAN membership, spanning tree parameters) as well as status data (learned MAC/forwarding-database entries, spanning tree port states). This lets an administrator monitor the software/hardware-level health of the switching fabric, since a spanning tree port stuck in a blocking or discarding state indicates a topology change or loop, and forwarding-database growth indicates how actively the switch is learning addresses. It builds on the concepts of the standard BRIDGE-MIB and Q-BRIDGE-MIB (IEEE 802.1D/802.1Q) as a proprietary parallel implementation for D-Link hardware. It is deployed on D-Link managed Layer 2 Ethernet switches in small-to-midsize enterprise LANs. Engineers can download the SWL2MGMT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SWL2MGMT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • D-Link managed Layer 2 Ethernet switches

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were provided for this module, so specific object names cannot be cited with confidence. Based on the description, it would plausibly expose a MAC address/forwarding-database table and a spanning-tree port-state table; an administrator would poll per-port spanning tree state to detect a port stuck in a blocking or discarding state, indicating a network loop or recent topology change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MAC address/forwarding-database entries
  • VLAN membership configuration
  • spanning tree port state
  • Layer 2 forwarding status

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using swL2PortUtilTxSec OID:

Select a D-Link managed Layer 2 Ethernet switch (MAC learning/VLAN/spanning-tree status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type swL2PortUtilTxSec into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. Indicates how many packets transmitted per second. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value drifts significantly from its normal baseline, since an unexpected change often points to a real underlying issue. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
