What Is SONUS-SONET-APS-MIB?

SONUS-SONET-APS-MIB is a private MIB from Sonus Networks (a VoIP softswitch/media gateway vendor) for managing SONET Automatic Protection Switching (APS) on the SONET transport interfaces of Sonus platforms, based on ANSI T1.105.01 and Telcordia GR-253-CORE standards for linear APS architectures. It exposes configuration and status data for each APS protection group, including the group's architecture (e.g., 1+1 or 1:N), administrative switching direction, extra-traffic allowance, and bit-error-rate thresholds for signal-fail and signal-degrade conditions. For hardware/software status monitoring this MIB is squarely fault-focused for the physical transport layer: it reports each APS group's operational status (working vs. protection line active), lets an operator confirm BER thresholds are correctly set to trigger protection switching, and provides notifications when a switchover occurs — key indicators of physical-layer link degradation on carrier-grade SONET circuits. It explicitly builds on ANSI T1.105.01 and Telcordia GR-253-CORE SONET APS standards for its object semantics. It is deployed on Sonus Networks media gateway/softswitch platforms with SONET transport interfaces in carrier telecommunications networks. Engineers can download the SONUS-SONET-APS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SONUS-SONET-APS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Sonus Networks media gateway/softswitch with SONET interfaces

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll the sonusApsGroupTable/sonusApsGroupEntry rows, indexed by sonusApsGroupId, to check sonusApsGroupStatus and confirm whether traffic is currently on the working or protection line for that group. Comparing sonusApsGroupSignalFailBerThreshold and sonusApsGroupSignalDegradeBerThreshold against real-time BER helps confirm the group is configured to switch over before a hard failure. A sonusSonetApsMIBNotifications trap firing alongside a change in sonusApsGroupStatus would indicate a protection switchover just occurred, warranting investigation into the working SONET line, while sonusApsGroupWaitToRestoreTime governs when the line reverts after signal quality is restored.

What Can Be Monitored

  • APS group operational status (working/protection)
  • signal-fail and signal-degrade BER thresholds
  • APS architecture and switching direction
  • wait-to-restore timer
  • protection switchover notifications

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using sonusApsGroupProtectionSwitchingByteFailures OID:

Select a Sonus Networks media gateway/softswitch with SONET interface (linear APS protection-group status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type sonusApsGroupProtectionSwitchingByteFailures into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports a count of APS Protection Switching Byte failures. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
