What Is SONUS-MEDIA-GATEWAY-SERVICE-GROUP-MIB?

SONUS-MEDIA-GATEWAY-SERVICE-GROUP-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Sonus Networks (a VoIP/media gateway and softswitch vendor, later Ribbon Communications) used to manage Media Gateway Service Groups, which are logical groupings of media gateways controlled by a common softswitch controller for TDM-to-packet network interworking. It exposes configuration data such as service group name, controller association, service group type and mode, plus administrative controls like action triggers and timeouts. Its primary monitoring value is software/operational status rather than hardware: administrators watch the admin state and row status of each service group to confirm gateways are correctly provisioned and active, detecting misconfiguration or controller-association failures before they cause call routing outages. It relies on the standard SNMPv2/TEXTUAL-CONVENTION and RowStatus conventions for table row lifecycle management, and is typically layered alongside other Sonus MIBs covering the physical media gateway and signaling components. It is deployed in carrier and enterprise VoIP networks where Sonus media gateways bridge legacy TDM trunks to SIP/packet cores. Engineers can download the SONUS-MEDIA-GATEWAY-SERVICE-GROUP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SONUS-MEDIA-GATEWAY-SERVICE-GROUP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Sonus Networks media gateway
  • Sonus/Ribbon softswitch-controlled VoIP gateway

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll sonusMgsgServiceGrpTable/sonusMgsgServiceGrpEntry, indexed by sonusMgsgServiceGrpListIndex, to check sonusMgsgServiceGrpAdminState for each entry named via sonusMgsgServiceGrpName. If sonusMgsgServiceGrpAdminState shows a service group as out-of-service or its sonusMgsgServiceGrpControllerName points to an unreachable controller, that signals a provisioning or connectivity fault affecting call routing through that gateway group. sonusMgsgServiceGrpRowStatus and sonusMgsgServiceGrpAction can also be checked to confirm a table row was created/activated successfully rather than left incomplete.

What Can Be Monitored

  • service group admin state
  • service group name and type
  • controller association
  • service group mode
  • row/provisioning status
