snmpInASNParseErrs
Module: SNMPv2-MIB
OID (symbolic): SNMPv2-MIB::snmpInASNParseErrs
OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.2.1.11.6
Node type: OBJECT-TYPE
Type: Counter32
Access: read-only
Description: The total number of ASN.1 or BER errors encountered by the SNMP entity when decoding received SNMP messages.
What is snmpInASNParseErrs?
This is a running count of SNMP messages that could not be decoded because they contained malformed binary data or ASN.1 syntax errors. Network engineers use it to detect network corruption, broken monitoring tools, or attackers sending garbage SNMP packets. A rising counter suggests either flaky networking or a probe crafting invalid SNMP messages.
Examples
Walk all instances (SNMPv2c):
snmpwalk -v2c -c public <target> 1.3.6.1.2.1.11.6 snmpwalk -v2c -c public <target> SNMPv2-MIB::snmpInASNParseErrs
Get a specific instance (index 1):
snmpget -v2c -c public <target> 1.3.6.1.2.1.11.6.1 snmpget -v2c -c public <target> SNMPv2-MIB::snmpInASNParseErrs.1
SNMPv3 example:
snmpget -v3 -l authPriv -u snmpv3-user -a SHA -A "AuthPassword1" -x AES -X "PrivPassword1" <target> snmpInASNParseErrs.1
