Category: SNMP Framework

Description: Defines objects for configuring proxy forwarding of SNMP messages between different management domains.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring SNMP-PROXY-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is SNMP-PROXY-MIB?

SNMP-PROXY-MIB, defined in RFC 3413, is a vendor-neutral IETF standard MIB module providing objects for remotely configuring an SNMP proxy-forwarding application that relays SNMP messages between different management domains or contexts. It exposes configuration data — proxy entries specifying source/target contexts, engine IDs, and forwarding parameters — rather than performance counters or hardware status. Its monitoring relevance centers on the management infrastructure itself: confirming that proxy forwarding rules are correctly provisioned and active (via row status) so management traffic reaches the right target, rather than reporting on CPU, memory, or environmental sensors. It depends on and is designed to work with the broader SNMP Management Architecture (RFC 3411-3418), particularly SNMP-TARGET-MIB for the target parameters referenced by its proxy entries. It is typically deployed on SNMP mid-level managers or gateway agents that need to bridge management traffic across security or administrative domain boundaries. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the SNMP-PROXY-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SNMP-PROXY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • SNMP proxy/gateway agents and mid-level managers

Monitoring Examples

An admin would walk snmpProxyTable/snmpProxyEntry, examining snmpProxyType, snmpProxyContextEngineID, and snmpProxyContextName to confirm which proxy relationships are configured, and check snmpProxyRowStatus to verify a given proxy entry is active rather than notReady or notInService. If snmpProxySingleTargetOut or snmpProxyMultipleTargetOut references a snmpProxyTargetParamsIn value that no longer matches a valid target, forwarded requests would silently fail, which the row status and target references help diagnose.

What Can Be Monitored

  • proxy forwarding entry configuration
  • proxy type (read/write/trap/inform)
  • target context engine ID and name
  • row status of proxy entries
  • target parameters used for forwarding
