All MIBs › COMMUNITY-MIB
Category: SNMP Framework
Description: Manages SNMP community strings and access control parameters for SNMPv1/v2c network management.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is COMMUNITY-MIB?
COMMUNITY-MIB corresponds to the IETF's standard SNMP Community MIB (RFC 3584), a vendor-neutral module that lets an SNMPv3-capable agent map legacy SNMPv1/v2c community strings to security names and contexts, bridging older community-based access control into the View-based Access Control Model. It exposes configuration data describing each defined community string, its associated security name and context, an optional transport-tag list, and storage type, rather than hardware telemetry. In terms of status monitoring, this MIB is used to audit software/security configuration - confirming which community strings are active on a device and what access they grant - rather than checking hardware health, uptime, or environmental conditions. It depends directly on the SNMP-VACM-MIB (for access control views) and SNMP-TARGET-MIB (for transport addressing) to form a complete SNMPv1/v2c-over-SNMPv3 access-control picture. It is present on essentially any SNMP-managed network device that must continue to support SNMPv1/v2c management clients. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the COMMUNITY-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in COMMUNITY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer - any SNMP-managed network device
Monitoring Examples
An administrator auditing SNMP access on a device reviews the community table's entries to see each configured community string's mapped security name and the context it's permitted to access, checking for overly permissive or forgotten legacy communities such as a default 'public' string. Because this MIB feeds into VACM, any weakness found here (an unrestricted community with no transport-tag restriction) is effectively a device-wide security-configuration exposure that needs remediation.
What Can Be Monitored
- configured community strings
- community-to-security-name mappings
- community-to-context mappings
- transport/source-address restrictions per community
