Last Updated: 1999-07-14

Category: Nortel Networks, WAN and Routing

Description: Manages Nortel Shasta IP services BRAS subscriber sessions, policy enforcement, and QoS parameters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SHASTA-MIB?

SHASTA-MIB, per its extracted module description, is the top-level Structure of Management Information module for the Shasta Networks enterprise (Shasta Networks was acquired by Nortel and its IP Services Switch became the basis of Nortel's BRAS/subscriber-management product line). Only the enterprise OID-root text was present in this extract, so it appears to function as the SMI/naming module underpinning the broader Shasta/Nortel subscriber-management MIB suite rather than defining the runtime subscriber-session, policy, or QoS objects itself. Where those companion MIBs are loaded, the suite as a whole is used to monitor BRAS hardware and software status — subscriber session counts, policy/QoS enforcement state, and system health — but that data isn't represented in this module's extract. It is a foundational dependency for the rest of the Shasta/Nortel BRAS MIB family, which registers its object identifiers under the arc this module defines. It would be loaded alongside those companion MIBs when managing a Nortel/Shasta IP Services Switch (BRAS) in a broadband subscriber-access network, where SHASTA-MIB SNMP monitoring forms the foundational OID root beneath the full Nortel/Shasta BRAS management suite.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SHASTA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel/Shasta Networks IP Services Switch (BRAS)

Monitoring Examples

This extract shows only the enterprise SMI/OID-root definition, with no runtime objects sampled, so a concrete polling scenario can't be built from it; in practice, the companion Shasta/Nortel BRAS MIBs that register under this enterprise arc are what an operator would poll for live subscriber-session, policy, and QoS status.
