Category: Data Center Infrastructure Monitoring, Environmental and Power Monitoring

Description: Monitors Blue Coat appliance hardware sensor data including temperature, voltage, and fan speed.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SENSOR-MIB?

SENSOR-MIB (deviceSensorMIB) is a vendor-specific MIB from Blue Coat Systems that provides a generic framework for exposing physical sensor readings — temperature, voltage, and fan speed — on Blue Coat proxy/security appliances. It centers on the deviceSensorValueTable, indexed by deviceSensorIndex, whose entries carry deviceSensorUnits (celsius, volts, rpm, truthvalue, specialEnum), a scaled deviceSensorValue with its ExpBase10 deviceSensorScale, and an interpreted deviceSensorCode (e.g. temperature-high-critical, fan-slow-warning, voltage-low-critical) alongside deviceSensorStatus (ok/unavailable/nonoperational) and a deviceSensorTimeStamp of the last reading. A deviceSensorTrap notification, gated per-sensor by deviceSensorTrapEnabled, fires when a sensor value warrants attention. This makes the MIB a compact hardware-health layer for monitoring the physical condition of Blue Coat appliances rather than their proxy/security software behavior, and it depends on the BLUECOAT-MIB tree for its enterprise registration. Administrators can download the SENSOR-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser and poll appliance sensor health directly.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SENSOR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Blue Coat proxy/security appliances (ProxySG and related hardware platforms)

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls deviceSensorValueTable and cross-references deviceSensorUnits with deviceSensorValue/deviceSensorScale to read actual fan RPM or chassis temperature; a deviceSensorCode of fan-stopped or temperature-high-severe combined with deviceSensorStatus reporting nonoperational would indicate a cooling failure requiring immediate attention.

What Can Be Monitored

  • sensor value readings (temperature/voltage/rpm)
  • sensor operational status
  • sensor alarm code interpretation
  • per-sensor trap enable flags
  • sensor reading timestamp/age
