What Is RFC1284-MIB?
RFC1284-MIB implements the early "Definitions of Managed Objects for Ethernet-like Interface Types" specification (RFC 1284), a vendor-neutral IETF module later superseded by the EtherLike-MIB (RFC 1398, then RFC 2665/3635). It defines objects for monitoring Ethernet-like network interfaces, primarily statistics counters such as collisions, frame check errors, and other MAC-layer error conditions per interface. Its monitoring role centers on interface hardware/link health: it lets an operator detect a failing or misconfigured Ethernet port through rising collision or alignment/FCS error counts, a classic early indicator of a duplex mismatch or cabling fault. It is a direct predecessor to, and was ultimately superseded by, the EtherLike-MIB, and it complements the generic IF-MIB/MIB-II interfaces group for full interface monitoring. It would have been used on early Ethernet-equipped routers and hosts implementing SNMP-based Ethernet statistics before the EtherLike-MIB became the standard.
