What Is RFC1271-TRAPS?

RFC1271-TRAPS defines the notification (trap) companion for the original Remote Network Monitoring (RMON) MIB specified in RFC 1271, covering the alarm/event mechanism used by RMON probes. It defines the rising-threshold and falling-threshold trap notifications that an RMON agent sends when a monitored statistic crosses an administrator-configured boundary. Rather than exposing polled data itself, it is the alerting layer for RMON-based monitoring: it lets a network management station be proactively notified of software/traffic-level conditions -- such as an error-rate or utilization counter breaching a threshold -- without continuous polling, complementing the counters defined in the base RMON MIB rather than any hardware sensors. It is entirely dependent on, and only meaningful alongside, the base RMON MIB (RFC 1271) alarm and event tables that define the thresholds these traps report against. It is used wherever RMON probes or RMON-capable switch/router agents are deployed to provide threshold-crossing alerts for network traffic monitoring. Monitoring Examples

This module defines only the RMON rising-threshold and falling-threshold trap notifications themselves rather than data-bearing tables; an administrator who configures an RMON alarm entry against, for example, an interface error counter would receive one of these traps when the counter's value crosses the configured rising or falling threshold, but as a notifications-only module it has no pollable runtime data objects of its own to describe a polling scenario for.
