Category: IETF Standards
Description: Defines the original MIB-I management objects for internet-attached devices per RFC 1156.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RFC1156?
The MIB module actually named RFC1156 in this source tree is not the historic MIB-I object definitions from RFC 1156; it is a small compatibility stub whose own header states it exists to provide the internet, private, enterprises, and mgmt OBJECT IDENTIFIER roots (imported from RFC1155-SMI) plus a single mib OBJECT IDENTIFIER under mgmt, purely so that another module, SIGMA-MIB, can resolve its IMPORTS. The genuine RFC 1156 MIB-I — with groups like system, interfaces, at, ip, icmp, tcp, udp, egp — is not defined here; this file contains no OBJECT-TYPE definitions of its own. Its practical purpose is purely structural: acting as a shim so MIB compilers can successfully load dependent modules that still reference the legacy RFC1156 name without needing the full historic MIB-I text. It depends entirely on RFC1155-SMI (the Structure of Management Information) for the identifiers it re-exports and has no monitoring data of its own to expose. Because there are no live objects to poll, this module is really a build-time dependency rather than something an administrator would query on a device, and it is typically consulted only as an RFC1156 reference when resolving MIB compilation errors.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RFC1156. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB scaffolding (referencing RFC 1156 by name only), not tied to a specific manufacturer
Monitoring Examples
A MIB compiler processing SIGMA-MIB's IMPORTS clause loads this RFC1156 stub only to resolve the mib, private, and enterprises OBJECT IDENTIFIER roots; there is no polling scenario here since the module defines no OBJECT-TYPE objects, so an operator would never GET anything from "RFC1156" itself.
What Can Be Monitored
- OBJECT IDENTIFIER root definitions only (mib, private, enterprises, mgmt) — no pollable managed objects are defined in this stub
