What Is RDN-CHANNEL-BONDING-MIB?

RDN-CHANNEL-BONDING-MIB is a Motorola (BSR CMTS) enterprise MIB implementing DOCSIS 3.0 channel bonding management for cable broadband access, covering both downstream and upstream bonded channel groups. It exposes a bonding-group table describing which downstream/upstream RF channels are combined into a bonding group per MAC domain, and a corresponding statistics table tracking per-channel octet and packet counts within each group. Its monitoring value is centered on cable-plant performance: operators track rdnBondingGroupStatsOctetCount/PacketCount per channel to detect an unbalanced or failing RF channel within a bonding group, which would show up as reduced throughput or packet loss for subscribers on that group. It is built on and dependent on the DOCSIS 3.0 channel-bonding architecture defined by CableLabs, extending standard DOCS-IF3-MIB-style concepts with Motorola-specific objects. It is deployed on Motorola BSR CMTS headend equipment in cable operator networks delivering bonded DOCSIS 3.0 broadband service. Engineers can download the RDN-CHANNEL-BONDING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RDN-CHANNEL-BONDING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Motorola BSR CMTS (cable modem termination system)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll rdnBondingGroupTable (rdnBondingGroupEntry) for rdnBondingGroupChanId entries under a given rdnBondingGroupId/rdnBondingGroupMacIfIndex to confirm all expected RF channels are part of a downstream or upstream (rdnBondingGroupDir) bonding group. Checking rdnBondingGroupStatsTable (rdnBondingGroupStatsEntry) for rdnBondingGroupStatsOctetCount and rdnBondingGroupStatsPacketCount per rdnBondingGroupStatsChanId would reveal if one channel in the group is carrying disproportionately less traffic, indicating an RF impairment or failed channel that is degrading the bonded group's effective throughput for subscribers.

What Can Be Monitored

  • downstream/upstream bonding group membership
  • bonded channel IDs per group
  • per-channel octet and packet counts
  • bonding group statistics

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rdnBondingGroupStatsOctetCount OID:

Select a Motorola BSR CMT (DOCSIS 3.0 downstream/upstream channel bonding statistics) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rdnBondingGroupStatsOctetCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This entry contains the statistical count of the number of octets sent through this downstream or upstream for this bonding group. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
