Category: DOCSIS and Cable

Description: Monitors chassis hardware inventory, card presence, and slot status on Motorola BSR broadband services router platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RDN-CHASSIS-MIB?

RDN-CHASSIS-MIB is a Motorola-proprietary MIB covering chassis-level hardware for Motorola BSR (Broadband Services Router) platforms, exposing hardware inventory information such as which cards or modules are present in each chassis slot. It belongs to the hardware-inventory/environmental monitoring category, focused on physical presence and slot status rather than traffic or protocol data. Its core monitoring value is hardware status: it lets an operator confirm that expected line cards or modules are physically present and healthy in each slot, quickly surfacing a missing, failed, or newly inserted card. No specific objects were included in the input for this module beyond the general description, so exact object names cannot be cited. It follows Motorola's proprietary chassis MIB pattern used across its BSR product line rather than the IETF ENTITY-MIB, and it is deployed on Motorola BSR broadband services routers used by cable/MSO operators for DOCSIS and broadband edge services. Engineers can download the RDN-CHASSIS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RDN-CHASSIS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Motorola BSR (Broadband Services Router)

Monitoring Examples

No specific object names were supplied for this module, so a concrete polling example cannot be responsibly constructed; based on its description, an operator would poll per-slot card-presence and status objects to confirm all expected line cards in a Motorola BSR chassis are inserted and operating normally, and to detect a card removal or failure.

What Can Be Monitored

  • card presence per slot
  • slot status
  • chassis hardware inventory

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rdnSlotUnerroreds OID:

Select a Motorola BSR (Broadband Services Router) (chassis slot/card hardware inventory) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rdnSlotUnerroreds into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of codewords received on this CMTS slot without error. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter's growth rate drops noticeably relative to overall traffic on this slot, since a falling proportion of error-free codewords indicates rising RF impairment. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
