Category: Protection and Redundancy, Vendor: Ericsson

Description: Manages SONET/SDH Automatic Protection Switching configuration and switchover status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-APS-MIB?

RBN-APS-MIB is a vendor-specific module (Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge platforms) implementing SONET/SDH linear Automatic Protection Switching (APS) management, derived from Telcordia GR-253-CORE. It exposes configuration for APS groups (working/protect line assignment, switching mode) and thresholds for signal degrade and signal fail bit-error-rate conditions, along with a command table to trigger manual protection switches. Its central monitoring purpose is fault/status detection at the physical transport layer: tracking apsConfigSdBerThreshold/apsConfigSfBerThreshold breaches and switch command results reveals whether a SONET line has degraded or failed and whether traffic has successfully switched to the protect line, a key hardware-health indicator for carrier transport equipment. It is explicitly derived from the GR-253-CORE SONET APS standard and complements standard SONET/SDH interface MIBs. It is typically deployed on SONET/SDH-equipped Redback SmartEdge routers in carrier access and aggregation networks requiring line-level redundancy. Engineers can download the RBN-APS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-APS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Redback SmartEdge router (SONET/SDH-equipped)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll apsConfigTable/apsConfigEntry, checking apsConfigMode and the current protection state, alongside apsConfigSdBerThreshold and apsConfigSfBerThreshold to see if a monitored SONET line's bit-error rate has crossed the signal-degrade or signal-fail threshold. An unexpected switchover, verified via apsCommandTable/apsCommandSwitch results, indicates the working line failed and traffic has failed over to the protect line, prompting investigation of the physical SONET circuit. apsConfigWaitToRestore would be checked to confirm the hold-off timer before reverting back to the primary line is configured as intended.

What Can Be Monitored

  • APS group configuration and mode
  • signal degrade BER threshold
  • signal fail BER threshold
  • protection switch commands/status
  • wait-to-restore timer

RFC description

SNMP MIB based on RFC 3498 for managing Automatic Protection Switching (APS) in SONET networks, enabling rapid failure detection and sub-60-millisecond switchover between working and redundant optical circuits.

Start monitoring Redback (Ericsson) SmartEdge router with SONET/SDH interfaces (linear APS protection switching) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
