Description: Manages per-BGP-peer traffic accounting and byte counters on Redback SmartEdge routers.

What Is RBN-BGP-ACCOUNTING-MIB?

RBN-BGP-ACCOUNTING-MIB is a vendor-specific module for Redback SmartEdge routers implementing BGP-policy-based traffic accounting, tracking IP traffic differentiated by BGP policy attributes such as community lists or AS paths. It exposes per-bucket traffic counters (packet and octet counts) tied to a circuit/interface and SNMP context, allowing traffic to be broken down by policy classification rather than just physical interface. Its monitoring role is primarily performance/traffic accounting rather than hardware fault detection: administrators poll rbnBpaInPacketCount and rbnBpaInOctetCount per rbnBpaBucketIndex to track how much traffic matches specific BGP policy classes on a given circuit, useful for capacity planning, billing, or detecting unexpected traffic pattern shifts. It depends on the router's underlying BGP routing configuration (community lists, AS-path policies) and SNMP context-based access as defined in SNMPv2 conventions. It is typically deployed on Redback SmartEdge BRAS/router platforms in ISP networks doing policy-based traffic accounting per BGP peer or route-class, and the RBN-BGP-ACCOUNTING-MIB download is available for import into a MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-BGP-ACCOUNTING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Redback SmartEdge router

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll rbnBpaTable/rbnBpaEntry, correlating rbnBpaBucketIndex with rbnBpaInterfaceName and rbnBpaCircuitDescr to see packet and octet counts (rbnBpaInPacketCount, rbnBpaInOctetCount) accumulated for a specific BGP policy bucket. A sudden spike or drop in these counters for a given rbnBpaContextName would indicate a shift in traffic matching that BGP community/AS-path policy, useful for spotting route-leak or peering-traffic anomalies. This table is typically pulled periodically to feed traffic accounting or billing systems keyed by BGP policy class.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-policy inbound packet count
  • per-policy inbound octet count
  • BGP accounting bucket index
  • circuit/interface traffic association
  • SNMP context-scoped accounting

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rbnBpaInPacketCount OID:

Select a Redback SmartEdge router (BGP-policy-based traffic accounting) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rbnBpaInPacketCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The total number of packets received for a particular bgp routing policy on an interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
