Description: Manages Ethernet interface configuration and statistics for Cyan optical transport platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CYAN-ETH-MIB?

CYAN-ETH-MIB is a Cyan Inc. proprietary MIB for its Z-Series optical transport/packet-optical platforms, covering the Ethernet Termination (ETH) function that maps Ethernet client traffic onto the optical transport layer. It exposes per-termination-point configuration and status identified by shelf, module, and Ethernet-termination indices, including administrative state, an in-service 'soak time' used when bringing a port up, flow-point pooling subtype, and identifiers for the far-end network element (shelf, slot, system, and PTP IDs) that the local port connects to. For monitoring, cyanEthAdminState is the primary interface/hardware status signal — confirming whether a given Ethernet termination is administratively up, down, or in a soak/testing period — while the far-end identifier fields let an operator verify that a termination point is connected to the expected remote shelf/slot rather than a misprovisioned neighbor. It depends on Cyan's broader chassis/shelf MIB structure for shelf and module identification context. It is deployed in metro and long-haul optical transport networks using Cyan (later Ciena Z-Series) packet-optical platforms. Engineers can download the CYAN-ETH-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CYAN-ETH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cyan (Ciena) Z-Series packet-optical transport platform

Monitoring Examples

An operator polling cyanEthTable/cyanEthEntry would check cyanEthAdminState per cyanEthShelfId/cyanEthModuleId/cyanEthEthTermId to confirm a given Ethernet termination point is in service. Comparing cyanEthFarEndShelfId/cyanEthFarEndSlotId/cyanEthFarEndSystemId against the expected topology reveals cross-connect or fiber-patching errors where a port unexpectedly links to the wrong far-end system. cyanEthAutoinserviceSoakTimeSec would be checked when a newly activated port is still in its soak period rather than fully in service.

What Can Be Monitored

  • Ethernet termination admin state
  • far-end shelf/slot/system identity
  • in-service soak timer status
  • flow-point pool subtype
