Description: Defines SNMP trap notifications for security events and system faults on Palo Alto Networks firewalls.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PAN-TRAPS?

PAN-TRAPS is Palo Alto Networks' MIB module defining the SNMP trap (notification) types emitted by Palo Alto Networks firewall products, covering security-relevant events and system fault conditions. Rather than defining polled data objects, it standardizes the structure of asynchronous notifications the firewall sends when specific events occur, such as security policy actions, high-availability state changes, or system faults. Its role in monitoring is fault/event-driven rather than counter-polling: it lets a monitoring system be alerted in near-real time to firewall software and hardware fault conditions without needing to continuously poll. It is a companion module to Palo Alto's broader enterprise MIB tree and depends on the standard SNMPv2-SMI/NOTIFICATION-TYPE conventions, working alongside other PAN-* MIBs that define the actual object payloads carried in traps. It's deployed wherever Palo Alto Networks next-generation firewalls are managed, with traps directed to a SIEM or NMS for security and fault alerting. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the PAN-TRAPS file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PAN-TRAPS. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Palo Alto Networks firewall (PA-series)

Monitoring Examples

This module (sample_objects is empty) defines only NOTIFICATION-TYPE trap definitions with no polled data objects, so there is no counter-polling scenario to describe honestly; instead, an NMS would register to receive these traps and take action - such as opening a ticket - whenever the firewall fires one, for example on an HA failover or a hardware fault notification.
