Description: Provides SNMP management of a pcap/libpcap-based network capture agent, exposing capture filter configuration and packet counters.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is PCAP-MIB?
PCAP-MIB is a vendor-neutral MIB module for the bsnmp-pcap module of the BSD bsnmp SNMP agent, which exposes packet-capture filters running on top of libpcap. It is a niche network-monitoring/instrumentation MIB rather than a device-health MIB: it exposes a table of configured capture filters along with per-filter packet and byte counters. It is used to monitor traffic matching specific capture filters (e.g., counting packets of a particular protocol or pattern) rather than hardware status such as temperature or CPU load, though the counters can indirectly flag abnormal traffic volumes. It depends on the bsnmp agent framework and libpcap filter syntax, and is specific to FreeBSD/BSD systems running bsnmp with the pcap module loaded. Typical deployment is a FreeBSD-based network appliance, firewall, or monitoring probe where operators want lightweight, filter-based traffic counters accessible via SNMP. Engineers can download the PCAP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PCAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- FreeBSD-based network appliance or monitoring probe running bsnmp
Monitoring Examples
Polling pcapTable/pcapEntry lets an operator enumerate configured filters via pcapDescr and pcapDevice, and watch pcapPackets/pcapOctets increment to confirm that a specific traffic pattern (defined in pcapFilter) is actually being seen on the monitored interface. A sudden halt in counter growth for a filter that should always see traffic (e.g., matching broadcast ARP) would indicate the capture device or interface has stopped receiving packets.
What Can Be Monitored
- configured capture filters
- per-filter packet count
- per-filter byte count
- capture device/interface binding
