Category: Database

Description: Monitors Oracle Database instance health, session counts, tablespace usage, and performance metrics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ORADB-MIB?

ORADB-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module for monitoring Oracle relational database server instances, exposing internals of the Oracle RDBMS engine to general-purpose SNMP management platforms. It surfaces database performance counters such as buffer cache statistics, physical disk I/O activity, redo log generation, consistent-read activity, and SQL parse rates, organized around a system-wide statistics table. This MIB is used chiefly to monitor the software/service health and performance load of the Oracle database engine rather than physical hardware, with indicators like physical reads/writes, buffer cache hit efficiency (free buffer inspected vs. requested), block change rates, and parse counts revealing I/O bottlenecks, cache pressure, or SQL inefficiency long before an outage occurs. It builds on standard SNMPv2-SMI conventions and loosely mirrors data available through Oracle's own V$SYSSTAT dynamic performance views. It is typically deployed on production Oracle database servers monitored by enterprise NMS or capacity-planning tools alongside OS-level and Oracle Listener monitoring. Engineers can download the ORADB-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ORADB-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Oracle database server
  • Oracle RDBMS instance monitored via SNMP

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls the oraDbSysTable/oraDbSysEntry row for counters like oraDbSysPhysReads and oraDbSysPhysWrites to trend disk I/O load, and compares oraDbSysConsistentGets against oraDbSysConsistentChanges to gauge multi-version read consistency overhead. A widening gap between oraDbSysFreeBufferRequested and oraDbSysFreeBufferInspected signals buffer cache contention that may call for a larger SGA. A sustained rise in oraDbSysParseCount without matching query volume growth can indicate hard-parsing due to poor cursor sharing, driving up CPU usage on the database host.

What Can Be Monitored

  • physical reads/writes rate
  • buffer cache efficiency
  • consistent gets/changes
  • SQL parse count
  • redo log entries generated
  • database block change rate
