Category: Database

Description: Monitors Oracle Net listener process status, connection counts, and service registrations.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ORALISTENER-MIB?

ORALISTENER-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module for monitoring the Oracle Net Listener, the background process that accepts incoming client connections and routes them to Oracle database instances. It exposes a listener table describing each configured listener's identity, version, configuration files, and operational parameters such as trace and security levels. Its core monitoring value is software/process status: it reports oraListenerStartDate and oraListenerUptime so an administrator can confirm the listener process is running continuously and detect unexpected restarts, and it surfaces log/trace/parameter file paths used for troubleshooting connectivity failures. It is a companion module to ORADB-MIB and relies on general SNMPv2-SMI textual conventions rather than any DB-specific standard. It is deployed on Oracle database hosts so that network monitoring tools can detect listener downtime independently of the database engine itself, since a database can be healthy while its listener is down and unreachable. Engineers can download the ORALISTENER-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ORALISTENER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Oracle database server
  • Oracle Net Listener process host

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls oraListenerTable/oraListenerEntry using oraListenerIndex to enumerate configured listeners, then checks oraListenerUptime and oraListenerStartDate to confirm the listener process has not silently restarted. If oraListenerUptime unexpectedly resets to a low value, it indicates a listener crash or manual bounce, prompting a check of oraListenerLogFile and oraListenerTraceFile for the root cause. oraListenerSecurityLevel can also be monitored to flag configuration drift toward a less secure setting.

What Can Be Monitored

  • listener uptime
  • listener start time
  • listener version
  • trace level
  • security level
  • log/trace/parameter file locations
