Category: Console Servers

Description: Manages console port pattern matching rules for automated alerting on Opengear out-of-band management appliances.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is OPENGEAR-PATTERN-MIB?

OPENGEAR-PATTERN-MIB is an Opengear-specific module for their out-of-band console server/management appliances (ACM, CM series), covering console text pattern-matching rules used to trigger alerts. Rather than exposing conventional hardware counters, it exposes an event table recording matched text patterns seen on monitored serial console ports. Its monitoring value is indirect but powerful: by scanning console output for strings like a kernel panic or login-failure message, it effectively monitors the software/health status of the equipment attached to each serial port, complementing direct SNMP polling of that equipment. It is closely tied to Opengear's broader enterprise MIB (device identity/notification infrastructure) and to the SNMP trap mechanism for alert delivery. It is typically deployed in data centers or remote/branch sites where an Opengear console server provides out-of-band serial access into racks of switches, servers, or other infrastructure. Engineers can download the OPENGEAR-PATTERN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in OPENGEAR-PATTERN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Opengear console servers / out-of-band management appliances (ACM, CM series)

Monitoring Examples

ogpatnEventTable/ogpatnEventEntry, indexed by ogpatnEventIndex, records ogpatnEventDescription, the matched ogpatnEventText, and the source ogpatnEventPortNumber/ogpatnEventPortLabel. An administrator configuring a pattern like 'Kernel panic' would receive an ogpatnMibNotifications trap referencing the ogpatnEventPortLabel for a specific rack device, revealing a crash on equipment that has no SNMP agent of its own. This lets console-text-based fault detection substitute for direct hardware monitoring on legacy or unmanaged gear.

What Can Be Monitored

  • console pattern-match events
  • matched event text
  • console port number/label
  • event descriptions
