Organization: Opengear Inc.

Last Updated: 2010-03-22

Category: Console Servers

Description: Defines the SMI structure and top-level object registrations for Opengear management appliance MIB modules.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is OPENGEAR-SMI-MIB?

OPENGEAR-SMI-MIB is Opengear's enterprise Structure of Management Information module, registering the opengear root object identifier under { enterprises 25049 } and defining the subtree layout that all other Opengear MIB modules build on. It contains no monitorable data of its own — only OBJECT-IDENTITY placeholders such as ogProducts (root for sysObjectID assignments, detailed in OG-PRODUCTS-MIB), ogLegacyMgmt, ogExperimental, ogInternal, ogAgentCapability, ogConfig, ogMgmt, and ogModules. Its purpose is purely architectural: it establishes a stable numbering scheme so that Opengear's console-server and remote-management-appliance MIBs (covering serial ports, power control, cellular modems, and similar features) can be registered consistently without OID collisions. It is deployed alongside every other Opengear-specific MIB rather than standing alone, and typically the first thing a NMS operator does after obtaining the OPENGEAR-SMI-MIB download is compile it before any dependent Opengear module.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in OPENGEAR-SMI-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Opengear console servers and remote management appliances (structural/root MIB, not itself a monitoring MIB)

Monitoring Examples

An operator loads OPENGEAR-SMI-MIB first when adding a new Opengear console server to their NMS, since dependent modules (device inventory, serial port state, power control) resolve their OIDs under the opengear root defined here; a compilation error against this MIB would block every other Opengear MIB from loading correctly.

What Can Be Monitored

  • OID subtree registrations (structural only, no live counters)
  • product identity root (ogProducts)
  • agent-capability root (ogAgentCapability)
  • configuration and management module roots (ogConfig, ogMgmt, ogModules)
