Description: Monitors out-of-band failover link state and cellular backup activation on Opengear management appliances.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is OPENGEAR-FAILOVER-MIB?
OPENGEAR-FAILOVER-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module from Opengear that monitors out-of-band network failover events on Opengear management appliances, including activation of cellular or secondary backup links when the primary network connection fails. It exposes a table of failover events recording the primary and secondary link identities involved in each transition, effectively logging when and how the device switched connectivity paths. Its monitoring value is centered on connectivity/software status: detecting when a device has fallen back to a secondary (often cellular) link, which signals that the primary network path is down and out-of-band access now depends on the backup. It includes its own notification and conformance/compliance definitions, indicating it generates SNMP traps for failover events in addition to exposing polled status. It is deployed on Opengear console servers and remote-access gateways used for resilient out-of-band management of critical infrastructure. Engineers can download the OPENGEAR-FAILOVER-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in OPENGEAR-FAILOVER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Opengear console server
- out-of-band management appliance with cellular failover
Monitoring Examples
An admin would poll ogfovrEventTable and examine ogfovrEventPrimary and ogfovrEventSecondary for the most recent entries to determine which primary link failed and which secondary (e.g., cellular) link took over. Receiving an ogfovrMibNotifications trap tied to a new ogfovrEventIndex would immediately flag that a failover just occurred, prompting investigation into why the primary WAN or LAN uplink went down. Repeated failover events in a short period would indicate an unstable primary connection rather than a one-off outage.
What Can Be Monitored
- failover event history
- primary link identity
- secondary/backup link identity
- failover trap notifications
