Description: Manages Token Ring segment monitoring and error statistics for the Novell LANalyzer network analyzer.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Novell-LANalyzer-TR-MIB?

This MIB supports the Novell LANalyzer network protocol analyzer/probe product, specifically its Token Ring segment monitoring capability, and is modeled closely on the IETF RMON Token Ring extensions. It exposes a token ring statistics table covering per-segment traffic counters such as octets and packets carried, broadcast/multicast packet counts, MAC-layer octets and packets, and ring-purge event counts. Its monitoring role is squarely performance/traffic monitoring of a Token Ring segment -- tracking throughput, error/drop events, and ring-management (purge) activity -- rather than device hardware health, since it reflects what the probe observes on the wire. It parallels RFC 1513-style Token Ring RMON extensions, adapting them to the Novell LANalyzer product's own object tree. It is deployed on Novell LANalyzer probes/analyzers attached to legacy Token Ring network segments for traffic analysis and troubleshooting. Engineers can download the Novell-LANalyzer-TR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Novell-LANalyzer-TR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Novell LANalyzer network probe/analyzer
  • Token Ring network segment (legacy)

Monitoring Examples

An analyst would poll tokenRingStatsTable's tokenRingStatsDataOctets and tokenRingStatsDataPkts for a segment identified by tokenRingStatsIndex to gauge link utilization, and check tokenRingStatsDropEvents for signs of probe or ring overload. A rising tokenRingStatsRingPurges count indicates the ring is experiencing frequent purge/recovery events, a classic symptom of a failing or intermittently faulty ring station. Comparing tokenRingStatsBroadcastDataPkts and tokenRingStatsMulticastDataPkts against total traffic helps identify broadcast storms on the segment.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ring traffic octets/packets
  • broadcast and multicast packet counts
  • MAC-layer octets/packets
  • ring purge event count
  • drop events
