What Is NOVELL-IPX-MIB?

This is a Novell enterprise MIB for managing IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange) routing, service advertisement (SAP), and interface-level statistics on legacy NetWare devices and IPX-capable routers. It exposes a basic system table with per-instance IPX network number, node address, and system name, along with interface counters for received packets, header errors, unknown sockets, discards, and bad checksums. This is primarily a network-layer performance/fault MIB, used to monitor software-level protocol health by tracking packet reception errors and discards on each IPX interface, which reveals connectivity or configuration problems in an IPX network. It is a standalone legacy protocol MIB predating widespread IP adoption, with no dependency on other MIBs beyond standard SNMPv1/SMI conventions. Typical deployment is (historically) on Novell NetWare servers and IPX-routing network devices in enterprise LANs that ran IPX/SPX alongside or instead of IP. Engineers can download the NOVELL-IPX-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NOVELL-IPX-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IPX network number and node address
  • packet receive counters
  • header error counts
  • unknown socket errors
  • discarded packets
  • bad checksum counts

Supported Devices

  • Novell NetWare server
  • IPX-capable router (legacy)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll ipxBasicSysTable/ipxBasicSysEntry, indexed by ipxBasicSysInstance, for ipxBasicSysNetNumber, ipxBasicSysNode, and ipxBasicSysName to identify each IPX-enabled system, then check ipxBasicSysInReceives against ipxBasicSysInHdrErrors, ipxBasicSysInDiscards, and ipxBasicSysInBadChecksums. A rising ratio of ipxBasicSysInBadChecksums or ipxBasicSysInUnknownSockets to ipxBasicSysInReceives would indicate a misbehaving IPX node or a cabling/hardware issue on that segment. ipxBasicSysExistState confirms whether the IPX instance is currently active on the device.
