Category: Novell

Description: Defines SNMP traps for Novell License Server allocation failures, threshold crossings, and license pool events.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Novell-License-Server-Trap-MIB?

This MIB defines SNMP traps for Novell's License Server, the component responsible for enforcing and tracking software license allocation (NetWare Licensing Services) across a network. It carries trap payload fields identifying the server, the application whose license event occurred, the requesting user, and their network/MAC address. Its monitoring purpose is to alert on license-related software events -- allocation failures, license-pool threshold crossings, and exhaustion -- giving administrators visibility into software licensing health rather than hardware status. It depends on the underlying Novell NetWare Licensing Services (NLS) infrastructure for the license pool and allocation semantics it reports on. It is deployed on Novell NetWare license servers in enterprise networks that use centralized NLS license pools for client applications. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the Novell-License-Server-Trap-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Novell-License-Server-Trap-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Novell NetWare license server
  • NLS (NetWare Licensing Services) server

Monitoring Examples

An NMS receiving an nlstrap-mib notification would read appName and serverName to identify which licensed application and server generated the event, along with userName, networkAddress, and macAddress to pinpoint the client involved. trapTime lets the event be correlated with other license-server logs. A pattern of repeated traps for the same appName suggests that application's license pool is undersized and regularly hitting its allocation ceiling.

What Can Be Monitored

  • license allocation failure events
  • license threshold crossing events
  • affected application name
  • requesting user/client address
