What Is RFC1271-MIB?

RFC1271-MIB is the original vendor-neutral IETF Remote Network Monitoring (RMON) MIB, the first standard for remote LAN traffic monitoring, later superseded by RFC 1757/2819. It defines groups for Ethernet statistics collection, history sampling, alarm thresholds, host and host-conversation tables, filters, packet capture, and event/log generation, giving a probe or switch the ability to summarize traffic patterns without constant polling from a management station. Its monitoring focus is squarely on network traffic and performance behavior rather than physical hardware sensors: utilization percentages, error/collision counts, top-talker host statistics, and threshold-crossing alarms that trigger logged events are all exposed here. RFC1271-MIB was effectively superseded by later RMON revisions (RFC 1757, and RMON2 in RFC 2021), and because it is now mainly of historical interest, an RFC1271-MIB reference today is usually consulted to understand the original RMON group structure that its successors carried forward largely unchanged. It was historically deployed in RMON-capable probes and switches used for proactive LAN traffic monitoring and threshold-based alerting on Ethernet segments.

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were included for this module, but based on its well-known RMON structure, a typical scenario involves polling the Ethernet statistics group for collision and CRC error counts on a monitored segment, and the history group for utilization trends over time. The alarm group can be configured to watch a specific counter (e.g. errors per interval) and fire an event when it crosses a threshold, which the event group then logs or converts into an SNMP trap. The host table would separately reveal which MAC addresses are generating the most traffic on the segment.
