Description: Manages Newbridge Networks virtual switch configuration, port mapping, and forwarding state.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NNCVS-MIB?

NNCVS-MIB is a Newbridge Networks (later Alcatel) MIB for monitoring and configuring Voiceband Services (VS) cards used in the vendor's multiservice switching platforms. It exposes per-channel statistics covering line/signal quality (loss of clear channel seconds, remote channel failure seconds), buffering performance (underruns, overflows, and underflows), and per-media traffic counters for speech and fax transmission/reception. It is heavily monitoring-oriented, focused on detecting real-time voice/fax transport quality degradation — buffer underruns/overflows and sequence discontinuities directly signal jitter, packet loss, or timing problems affecting call quality on a voiceband card. It is a card/module-specific extension to Newbridge's broader switch management MIB suite and assumes the enclosing chassis/slot addressing conventions of that platform. It is typically deployed in telecom carrier or enterprise voice-over-ATM/Frame-Relay environments using Newbridge voiceband service cards to carry digitized voice and fax traffic. Engineers can download the NNCVS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NNCVS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Newbridge Networks voiceband services (VS) card in a multiservice switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll nncVSStatisticsTable (via nncVSStatisticsEntry) to retrieve per-channel counters such as nncVSBufferUnderflows, nncVSBufferOverflows, and nncVSSequenceDiscontinuities, where rising counts indicate jitter buffer problems affecting real-time voice quality. Monitoring nncVSLOCSeconds and nncVSRemoteChanFailureSeconds reveals loss-of-clear-channel or remote failure conditions impacting the circuit. The nncVSSpeechRx/Tx and nncVSFaxRx/Tx counters let an administrator confirm speech and fax traffic are flowing correctly, flagging a stalled fax session if one direction's counter stops incrementing.

What Can Be Monitored

  • buffer underruns/overflows
  • sequence discontinuities
  • loss-of-clear-channel seconds
  • remote channel failure seconds
  • speech Rx/Tx traffic counters
  • fax Rx/Tx traffic counters

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using nncVSLOCSeconds OID:

Select a Newbridge Networks voiceband services (VS) card in a multiservice switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type nncVSLOCSeconds into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This count gives the number seconds for which Loss of Continuity was declared. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
