Category: QoS

Description: Monitors NMS Communications interface traffic thresholds and triggers alarms when utilization limits are exceeded.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NMS-IF-THRESHOLD-MIB?

NMS-IF-THRESHOLD-MIB is a vendor MIB from NMS Communications that defines managed objects for monitoring configurable traffic thresholds on network interfaces, using reusable threshold templates that can be applied to any subset of interfaces on a network element. It exposes configuration data (threshold templates, their names, notification hold-down timers, and row-creation status) alongside monitoring/alarm data reflecting when interface utilization crosses defined limits. Its central use is performance and fault monitoring: it lets an operator detect when interface traffic exceeds set thresholds and triggers notification-hold-down-controlled alarms, a software-level traffic-health indicator rather than a physical hardware metric. The module explicitly notes it should be used instead of the EVENT-MIB when a threshold needs to apply to only one interface, indicating a direct relationship to the IETF EVENT-MIB as an alternative/overlapping mechanism. It is deployed on NMS Communications switches and routers in networks where administrators want a common set of interface traffic thresholds applied across many ports without configuring each individually. Engineers can download the NMS-IF-THRESHOLD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NMS-IF-THRESHOLD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • nms Co., Ltd. switch/router (interface traffic threshold templates, vendor unidentified)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would create entries in nmsifthTemplateTable (indexed by nmsifthTemplateIndex, named via nmsifthTemplateName) defining a threshold template, then check nmsifthThresholdTable and nmsifthThresholdLastChange to see when a threshold breach last occurred on an assigned interface; a recent change timestamp combined with a notification would indicate a port has exceeded its configured utilization threshold. The nmsifthTemplateNotifyHoldDownTime object lets an admin confirm notification suppression windows are set correctly to avoid alarm flooding.

What Can Be Monitored

  • interface utilization threshold breaches
  • threshold template configuration
  • notification hold-down timing
  • last threshold change time
