What Is MP-NETWATCH-MIB?

MP-NETWATCH-MIB is a vendor MIB, apparently from a multi-VPN router platform given the presence of a VPN identifier field, for monitoring network reachability by actively watching configured destination networks and reporting path availability and status. It exposes configuration objects defining watched network address/subnet-mask pairs (up to four per entry) alongside status objects such as entry status, timestamp of last status change, and ping status timestamp. It is used to monitor the software-level health of network reachability, letting an admin check the status change timestamp and ping status timestamp to see when a watched destination last changed reachability state, effectively detecting a downed route or unreachable peer network in near real time. It likely depends on the vendor's VPN/routing MIB tree, since entries are scoped per VPN identifier, tying reachability monitoring to a specific VPN instance. It is typically deployed on multi-VPN-capable routers or gateways needing continuous path-availability monitoring across several sites or VPN tunnels, where the MP-NETWATCH-MIB monitor function is central to detecting reachability failures across a multi-site VPN deployment.

Monitoring Examples

An admin configures an mpNetWatchID entry with mpNetWatchVPNID and up to four destination pairs (mpNetWatchNetworkAddr1/mpNetWatchSubNetMask1 through Addr4/Mask4), then polls mpNetWatchEntryStatus and mpNetWatchStatusTimeStamp to see the current reachability state and when it last changed. If mpNetPingStatusTimeStamp stops updating or mpNetWatchEntryStatus flips to a down/unreachable value, that signals the monitored network path or VPN peer has become unreachable. The mpNetWatchAction object would typically define what remedial action the device takes upon detecting the change.
