Description: Manages MEF User Network Interface (UNI) and Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC) parameters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MEF-UNI-EVC-MIB?

MEF-UNI-EVC-MIB is a Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) standards-based module for managing User Network Interfaces (UNIs) and Ethernet Virtual Connections (EVCs) in Carrier Ethernet service networks. It exposes configuration data (interface type, frame format, bandwidth profile group and L2CP group assignments) and status data (interface status type and maximum EVC count) for each service interface. It is used to monitor the operational status of Carrier Ethernet access hardware, tracking whether an interface's active EVC count is nearing its configured maximum and whether its configuration matches the provisioned service, both key hardware/service health indicators. It builds directly on MEF technical specifications (MEF 6.1 and related documents) for Carrier Ethernet service definitions rather than IETF standard MIBs. It is typically deployed on carrier-grade Ethernet switches and network interface devices (NIDs) at customer or provider network boundaries delivering MEF-compliant Carrier Ethernet services, as documented in the MEF-UNI-EVC-MIB reference material.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MEF-UNI-EVC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Carrier Ethernet switches/NIDs
  • MEF-compliant service provider network equipment

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls mefServiceInterfaceCfgTable to check mefServiceInterfaceCfgType and mefServiceInterfaceCfgFrameFormat for each UNI, confirming a port's mefServiceInterfaceCfgIngressBwpGrpIndex correctly maps to its bandwidth profile group. Polling mefServiceInterfaceStatusTable for mefServiceInterfaceStatusMaxVc reveals whether the number of EVCs on an interface is approaching its configured maximum, which would explain new EVC provisioning failures. mefServiceNotifications can alert when service interface status changes unexpectedly.

What Can Be Monitored

  • UNI interface type
  • frame format
  • bandwidth profile group assignment
  • L2CP group assignment
  • EVC count per interface
  • service interface status

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using mefServiceInterfaceStatisticsIngressUndersized OID:

Select a device implementing MEF-UNI-EVC-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type mefServiceInterfaceStatisticsIngressUndersized into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object is incremented for each frame received on a NE interface that was smaller than 64 octets. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in Ethernet frames), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
