Category: OAM

Description: Manages Ethernet First Mile (EFM) OAM operation on Mellanox network interfaces.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MELLANOX-EFM-MIB?

MELLANOX-EFM-MIB is a Mellanox Technologies enterprise MIB covering Ethernet First Mile (IEEE 802.3ah) OAM alongside general system identity and process management for Mellanox switches. It exposes system identity data (serial number, software version, build info, node name), a management process table, and a test-trap generator object. It is strongly used for software and hardware status monitoring: the process table's status and failure-count fields act as a watchdog for internal management daemons, while swVersion and buildInfo let an administrator confirm firmware consistency across a device fleet. It combines IEEE 802.3ah EFM OAM concepts with Mellanox's own general management framework, with no dependency on unrelated third-party MIBs. It is deployed for general operational health and first-mile link OAM monitoring on Mellanox Ethernet/InfiniBand switches, where the MELLANOX-EFM-MIB MIB supplies both the process-health and EFM OAM objects administrators poll.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MELLANOX-EFM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Mellanox Ethernet/InfiniBand switch

Monitoring Examples

Polling procTable indexed by procIndex reads procName and procStatus for each internal management process, and a nonzero or climbing procNumFailures indicates a crashing or restarting daemon. swVersion and buildInfo let an admin confirm firmware version consistency across a fleet. sendTestTrapSet can be used to verify SNMP trap delivery end-to-end.

What Can Be Monitored

  • system software version
  • serial number
  • internal process status
  • process failure count
