Category: IETF Standards

Description: Defines SIP (SMDS Interface Protocol) management objects for SMDS WAN interface monitoring per RFC 1304.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RFC1304-MIB?

RFC1304-MIB (commonly referenced as the SIP MIB, for SMDS Interface Protocol, not to be confused with Session Initiation Protocol) is a vendor-neutral IETF standards-track MIB defined in RFC 1304 for managing Switched Multi-megabit Data Service (SMDS) WAN interfaces. It defines objects covering SMDS interface configuration and operational counters such as address, protocol, and error statistics for SMDS-attached interfaces, aligned with the layered structure of the standard Interfaces MIB. Its monitoring role is centered on WAN interface performance and fault statistics -- packet/error counters and address-resolution state for the SMDS access link -- rather than general device hardware health, though interface-level up/down status contributes to overall link availability monitoring. It explicitly depends on and extends the standard IETF Interfaces MIB (RFC 1213/2863 ifTable) for its interface indexing. It was deployed in legacy carrier and enterprise WAN environments using SMDS access service, a technology now largely obsolete and superseded by Frame Relay and later Ethernet/IP WAN services. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the RFC1304-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RFC1304-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer -- applies to SMDS-attached WAN interface equipment

Monitoring Examples

No object list was provided for this build of the MIB, so specific field names cannot be cited directly; per RFC 1304, the module is understood to define SMDS interface address, protocol, and error/statistics tables layered on the standard ifTable, and a full monitoring scenario cannot be responsibly detailed without the concrete object names.
