What Is MDS-IF-LW-MIB?

MDS-IF-LW-MIB is a vendor MIB from GE MDS (now GE Digital Energy/Baicells-affiliated GE MDS) for its licensed wideband (narrowband/wideband) radio interface products used in industrial telemetry and SCADA wireless networks, part of the industrial wireless communications technology area. It exposes radio link status, initialization state, operating mode, alarm conditions, and hardware identification (serial number, hardware/firmware revision) as well as environmental data like temperature, alongside access-point address information for the wireless link. This makes it clearly useful for monitoring both hardware and software status of the radio: mIfLwLinkStatus and mIfLwInitStatus show whether the radio has established its wireless link, mIfLwAlarms surfaces fault conditions, mIfLwTemperature reveals thermal health, and mIfLwFirmwareRevision/mIfLwHardwareRevision confirm the running software/hardware versions. It is a self-contained GE MDS enterprise MIB without apparent dependency on other standard radio MIBs. It is deployed in SCADA, utility, and industrial telemetry networks using GE MDS wideband radios for remote site connectivity. Engineers can download the MDS-IF-LW-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MDS-IF-LW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll mIfLwStatusTable/mIfLwStatusEntry to check mIfLwLinkStatus and mIfLwCurrentDeviceMode for a remote radio, cross-referencing mIfLwTemperature to catch thermal stress in an outdoor enclosure. If mIfLwAlarms indicates an active fault, the operator would check mIfLwFirmwareRevision and mIfLwHardwareId/mIfLwSerialNumber to identify the specific unit and firmware version before dispatching a truck roll, and mIfLwApInfoApAddress to confirm which access point the radio is currently associated with.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using mIfLwTemperature OID:

Select a GE MDS licensed wideband radio (SCADA/telemetry) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type mIfLwTemperature into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The transceiver temperature. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the reported value exceeds the level expected for healthy operation, since sustained high temperature often precedes thermal shutdown or hardware degradation. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
