Category: Alarm and Event Management

Description: Defines objects for trap forwarding configuration in a LMS network management platform, controlling SNMP notification routing.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is LMS-TRAP-FORWARDING-MIB?

LMS-TRAP-FORWARDING-MIB defines objects for configuring how a LAN Management Solution (LMS)-style network management platform forwards received SNMP notifications on to downstream destinations. It exposes a forwarding configuration table listing destination address, community, and port per forwarding entry, plus rate-limiting parameters such as trap window time, maximum traps per window, and a counter of traps dropped due to rate limiting. It is used to monitor the software-level operational status of the trap-forwarding engine itself: whether forwarding entries are active (via row status), and whether the platform is currently rate-limiting and silently dropping notifications during a trap storm. It builds conceptually on standard SNMP notification/management concepts (akin to the SNMP-NOTIFICATION-MIB) though it is a management-platform-specific extension rather than a device MIB. It is deployed on a network management server that relays incoming traps to secondary NMS platforms, ticketing systems, or SIEM tools. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the LMS-TRAP-FORWARDING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in LMS-TRAP-FORWARDING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco LMS (LAN Management Solution)-style network management server, not an end network device

Monitoring Examples

numDroppedMaxPerWindowTraps, combined with trapWindowTime and maxTrapsPerWindow, lets an admin detect when the forwarding engine is rate-limiting and silently dropping notifications during a trap storm. Rows of lmsEventFwdTable/lmsEventFwdEntry, exposing destinationNetAddr, destinationCommunity, and destinationPort, are polled to verify that forwarding to a specific downstream management station is correctly configured and active via rowStatus.

What Can Be Monitored

  • forwarding destination configuration (address/community/port)
  • trap forwarding row status
  • trap rate-limit window
  • max traps per window
  • dropped traps due to rate limiting
