Description: Huawei BGP Graceful Restart MIB providing objects to configure and monitor BGP graceful restart capability and helper mode settings.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is HUAWEI-BGP-GR-MIB?
HUAWEI-BGP-GR-MIB is a Huawei-proprietary SNMP module implemented on Huawei carrier and enterprise routers/switches to manage the BGP Graceful Restart (GR) extension, which lets a router preserve forwarding state across a control-plane restart. It exposes configuration objects for enabling GR restarter or GR helper roles, per-peer/address-family GR capability negotiation, and restart-timer settings, so its data falls mainly into the configuration and protocol-state categories rather than physical hardware sensors. Even though it has no chassis environmental objects, it is a genuine software health indicator: operators use it to confirm whether a BGP process restart or route-processor switchover completed cleanly, whether a neighbor's GR capability negotiated as expected, and whether a restart is stuck in progress, effectively a routing-software recovery signal. It is a Huawei private extension layered conceptually on top of the standard BGP4-MIB and the IETF Graceful Restart specification (RFC 4724), inheriting BGP session identifiers from that context. It is typically deployed on Huawei NE/CE-series routers in service-provider or enterprise backbone networks where minimizing route-flap and traffic loss during planned BGP software restarts is a priority. Engineers can download the HUAWEI-BGP-GR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HUAWEI-BGP-GR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Huawei carrier/enterprise routers
- Huawei Ethernet switches running BGP
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll the per-peer GR-capability and restart-status objects on a BGP session after a scheduled control-plane upgrade or route-processor failover to confirm graceful restart negotiated and completed successfully. No sample object names were provided for this module, so specific table names cannot be cited, but the module description confirms the exposed data covers per-peer GR negotiation state and restart timers. If the restart-in-progress indicator never clears after the configured GR timer elapses, that signals a stuck restart requiring manual session reset rather than a clean failover.
What Can Be Monitored
- BGP graceful restart capability negotiation
- restart-in-progress status per peer
- GR helper vs restarter role
- restart timer countdown
