Description: HP SNMP MIB for VLAN-based Committed Access Rate (CAR) traffic policing applying bandwidth limits per VLAN on HP devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HP-VLAN-CAR-MIB?

HP-VLAN-CAR-MIB (its internal "sn" object prefix suggesting Foundry/Brocade-derived heritage rebranded under HP) is an HP networking MIB for configuring VLAN-based Committed Access Rate (CAR) traffic policing, applying bandwidth rate limits scoped to a specific VLAN on a switch/router. It exposes a table of per-VLAN CAR entries specifying direction (inbound/outbound), rate limits, burst limits, and the conform/exceed action taken on traffic. This is a configuration-oriented policing MIB rather than a hardware-health MIB; its runtime relevance for monitoring is confirming the enforced rate/limit values and conform action are being applied as configured to a VLAN's traffic. It builds on standard CAR/rate-limiting concepts also seen in other vendors' CAR MIBs and depends on the device's VLAN identification scheme for snVLanCARVLanId. Typical deployment is on HP (Foundry/Brocade-lineage) switches and routers in enterprise networks needing per-VLAN bandwidth control, where HP-VLAN-CAR-MIB SNMP monitoring confirms rate limits are enforced as configured.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-VLAN-CAR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP (Foundry/Brocade-lineage) switches and routers

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would inspect the snVLanCARTable (snVLanCAREntry) for a given snVLanCARVLanId and snVLanCARDirection to confirm the configured snVLanCARRate and snVLanCARLimit (and snVLanCARExtLimit for burst allowance) match policy intent. The snVLanCARConformAction object shows what happens to traffic exceeding the rate (e.g. drop or remark), and snVLanCARType/snVLanCARAccIdx identify the CAR classification and access-list index tying the rate limit to specific traffic. Unexpectedly high volumes being passed despite a low snVLanCARRate would suggest the CAR entry is misapplied or the conform action isn't dropping excess traffic as expected.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-VLAN CAR rate limit
  • per-VLAN CAR burst limit
  • traffic direction policed
  • conform/exceed action
  • CAR classification type
