Description: HP SNMP MIB for Committed Access Rate (CAR) traffic policing configuration and statistics on HP network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HP-CAR-MIB?

HP-CAR-MIB provides Committed Access Rate (CAR) traffic-policing configuration and statistics for HP network devices (the object prefix snPort suggests shared heritage with Foundry/Brocade-derived switch code later used in HP-branded switches). It exposes a per-port CAR table defining rate-limiting rules, including direction, rate, burst limits, and the conform/exceed action applied to traffic matching each rule. Its monitoring value is primarily configuration and traffic-shaping verification rather than raw hardware health: administrators check which rate-limiting policies are applied to which ports and can correlate CAR statistics with observed traffic drops or throttling. It depends on the standard IF-MIB ifIndex convention for identifying the port each CAR entry applies to. It is deployed on HP (Foundry/Brocade-lineage) network switches or routers where administrators need to enforce bandwidth caps or QoS policing on specific interfaces, making the HP-CAR-MIB MIB a standard reference for confirming those rate-limiting policies are applied as intended.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-CAR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP (Foundry/Brocade-lineage) network switch/router

Monitoring Examples

An administrator inspects snPortCARTable (snPortCAREntry, indexed by snPortCARifIndex and snPortCARRowIndex) to see the configured snPortCARDirection, snPortCARRate, and snPortCARLimit for a given port, confirming that a rate-limiting policy is applied as intended. The snPortCARConformAction object shows what happens to traffic within the configured rate (e.g. transmit) versus what would happen to non-conforming traffic. If users report unexpectedly throttled throughput on a port, checking snPortCARRate and snPortCARExtLimit against actual traffic volume would reveal whether CAR policing is the cause.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-port CAR rate limit
  • burst/extended limit
  • policing direction
  • conform action applied to traffic
