Description: Covers managed objects for GMPLS label values wider than 32 bits, enabling label representations needed for wavelength and fiber switching.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring GMPLS-LABEL-STD-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is GMPLS-LABEL-STD-MIB?

GMPLS-LABEL-STD-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards MIB, defined in RFC 4803, for managing generalized labels used in Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) systems, including labels for wavelength-switched and fiber-switched (as well as MPLS-style) interfaces. It exposes a label table keyed by interface and index that records label type and value, including specialized representations such as port-wavelength labels, freeform labels, and SONET/SDH VC labels. Rather than tracking hardware environmental sensors, its monitoring value is protocol/software state -- confirming which generalized labels are currently allocated to which interfaces, useful in verifying correct GMPLS signaling and label-switched path (LSP) setup across optical or packet transport equipment. It is explicitly designed to work alongside the GMPLS signaling framework of RFC 3471 and depends on the companion GMPLS-TC-STD-MIB for its textual conventions. It is typically deployed on carrier-grade optical/packet transport routers and switches that support GMPLS-based label switching for wavelength or fiber circuits. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the GMPLS-LABEL-STD-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in GMPLS-LABEL-STD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • GMPLS-capable optical/packet transport router or switch

Monitoring Examples

A network engineer would poll gmplsLabelTable (gmplsLabelEntry, indexed by gmplsLabelInterface, gmplsLabelIndex, gmplsLabelSubindex) to see which gmplsLabelType and corresponding value -- such as gmplsLabelMplsLabel, gmplsLabelPortWavelength, or gmplsLabelSonetSdhSignalIndex/gmplsLabelSdhVc -- is assigned to a given interface, verifying that an optical LSP is using the expected wavelength or SDH virtual container. Mismatched or missing label entries relative to a provisioned circuit would indicate a signaling failure in the GMPLS control plane.

What Can Be Monitored

  • allocated GMPLS label per interface
  • label type (MPLS/wavelength/SONET-SDH)
  • port wavelength assignment
  • SONET/SDH VC label mapping
