Description: Allows a network management agent to aggregate values of user-specified managed object instances and service queries on the aggregated results, reducing SNMP bandwidth.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring AGGREGATE-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is AGGREGATE-MIB?

AGGREGATE-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 4498) that lets a network management agent aggregate the values of several user-specified managed object instances into a single, optionally compressed, aggregated object, reducing the number of SNMP requests and the bandwidth needed to poll many related MOs. It defines aggrCtlTable (aggrCtlMOIndex, aggrCtlMODescr, aggrCtlCompressionAlgorithm choosing between none and deflate compression, aggrCtlEntryStatus RowStatus) to configure each aggregated MO, aggrMOTable (aggrMOInstance, an OBJECT IDENTIFIER pointing at the actual instance to sample, plus aggrMODescr) to list the constituent MOs in each group, and aggrDataTable (aggrDataRecord, aggrDataRecordCompressed, aggrDataErrorRecord) holding the resulting aggregated snapshot and any per-instance fetch errors. This is a control/data-aggregation MIB rather than a hardware-monitoring one, so it is useful for reducing polling overhead against high-scale device populations and for detecting per-instance fetch failures via aggrDataErrorRecord. It has no vendor dependency beyond standard SNMPv2 SMI/TC/CONF modules and RMON-MIB's OwnerString, and administrators bulk-loading reference material can find the AGGREGATE-MIB RFC alongside RFC 4498 itself.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AGGREGATE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 4498), not tied to a specific manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

An operator configures an aggrCtlEntry pointing at a set of interface counters via aggrMOTable, then polls the single aggrDataRecord instance in aggrDataTable instead of each counter individually; a non-empty aggrDataErrorRecord for that aggregated MO would indicate one or more of the constituent object instances failed to respond, flagging a stale or misconfigured entry in aggrMOTable.

What Can Be Monitored

  • aggregation control table entries (compression algorithm, storage type, row status)
  • constituent MO instance list per aggregated group
  • aggregated data snapshot record
  • compressed aggregated data record
  • per-instance error status within an aggregated record
