Description: GET-SUBTREE-MIB module

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is GET-SUBTREE-MIB?

GET-SUBTREE-MIB is a vendor-neutral experimental MIB produced by the IRTF Network Management Research Group (draft-irtf-nmrg-get-subtree-mib-01) that provides a trap-based mechanism for retrieving an entire MIB subtree in parallel, as an alternative to repeated GetNext/GetBulk polling. A manager first creates a row in getSubtreeRootTable specifying one or more root OIDs to retrieve, then creates a matching row in getSubtreeControlTable naming itself (via getSubtreeControlTarget, an SNMP-TARGET-MIB reference) as the recipient; the agent then streams the requested subtree back as a series of getSubtreeResponse notifications, each carrying a chunk of varbinds plus getSubtreeControlSeqNumber, getSubtreeControlCount, and getSubtreeControlDone to let the manager track completion. Both root and control rows are automatically deleted by the agent once retrieval finishes or is aborted, making this a self-cleaning, session-oriented control MIB rather than a persistent configuration MIB. It never advanced beyond experimental/informational status and depends only on core SNMPv2-SMI/SNMPv2-CONF constructs plus SNMP-TARGET-MIB for addressing, and engineers researching the GET-SUBTREE-MIB RFC draft will find it documents a bulk-retrieval-via-traps design that saw little adoption in production SNMP agents.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in GET-SUBTREE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based experimental MIB (draft-irtf-nmrg-get-subtree-mib-01), not tied to a specific manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

A manager creates a getSubtreeRootTable entry pointing at a large table's root OID and a matching getSubtreeControlTable entry naming itself as the trap target, then watches for a sequence of getSubtreeResponse notifications with getSubtreeControlDone finally set to true(1); notifications that stop arriving with getSubtreeControlDone still false would indicate the retrieval operation stalled or the agent aborted it.

What Can Be Monitored

  • subtree retrieval operation root OID(s)
  • retrieval control target and row status
  • trap sequence number and count
  • retrieval completion flag
