Category: Printer and Finishing

Description: Defines managed objects for managing printer finishing device subunits (staplers, binders, sorters, etc.).

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring Finisher-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is Finisher-MIB?

Finisher-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 3806) for managing printer finishing device subunits such as staplers, binders, sorters, and stackers attached to a printer. It exposes a device table describing each finishing subunit's type, presence, capacity unit, maximum and current capacity, associated media paths and outputs, and a status/description object per subunit, alongside related supply and media-input objects. Its monitoring focus is hardware status of printer finishing hardware: finDeviceStatus and finDeviceCurrentCapacity/finDeviceMaxCapacity let an operator detect a finisher subunit that is full, jammed, or otherwise unavailable (finDevicePresentOnOff), which is critical for print-shop or MFP fleet uptime. It is part of the IETF Printer MIB family and is designed to be used alongside the core Printer MIB (RFC 3805) and related supply/media-path MIBs for a complete printer management picture. It is deployed on network-attached printers and multifunction devices equipped with finishing accessories (staplers, hole punchers, booklet makers, output stackers) in office and print-production environments, and the Finisher-MIB RFC (RFC 3806) defines the standard object set these vendors implement.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Finisher-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • network printers and multifunction devices with finishing accessories

Monitoring Examples

An admin would walk finDeviceTable/finDeviceEntry to check finDevicePresentOnOff (confirming a stapler or sorter module is physically installed and detected) and finDeviceStatus for each finDeviceIndex, catching a finisher unit reporting a fault or offline condition. finDeviceCurrentCapacity versus finDeviceMaxCapacity (in the unit given by finDeviceCapacityUnit) would be polled to detect an output bin or stacker nearing full capacity, and finDeviceAssociatedMediaPaths/finDeviceAssociatedOutputs show which paper paths and output bins are linked to a given finishing device.

What Can Be Monitored

  • finishing subunit presence
  • finishing subunit status/fault state
  • current vs. maximum output capacity
  • associated media paths
  • associated outputs
