Category: Protocol: BGP, Technology: Routing, Vendor: Foundry/Brocade

Description: Brocade Foundry BGP4 version 2 MIB providing enhanced BGP peer, prefix, and route management objects for FastIron routing platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is FOUNDRY-BGP4V2-MIB?

FOUNDRY-BGP4V2-MIB is Brocade/Foundry's enhanced BGP4 version-2 MIB, closely tracking the IETF draft BGP4-V2 MIB, aimed at BGP routing on FastIron routing platforms. It exposes BGP peer session state, negotiated capabilities, per-peer prefix counts, and route/path attribute tables for the BGP-4 protocol. As a routing protocol MIB it is mostly used for software/protocol-state monitoring rather than physical hardware: it lets an operator confirm peering session uptime, session state transitions (idle/established), and prefix counts rather than temperature or fan status. It closely mirrors and depends on the IETF's evolving BGP4-V2 MIB standard (referenced directly in its description as part of an RFC draft), so it should be understood as a Brocade implementation of that emerging standard rather than a wholly proprietary design. It is deployed on Brocade/Foundry FastIron routers and Layer 3 switches running BGP in service-provider or enterprise WAN-edge networks. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the FOUNDRY-BGP4V2-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FOUNDRY-BGP4V2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, IETF-derived BGP4-V2 MIB implemented by Brocade/Foundry
  • FastIron routers and Layer 3 switches

Monitoring Examples

No concrete sample objects were provided for this module, but consistent with a BGP4-V2 MIB an operator would typically poll peer-entry tables for session state (established vs. idle) and the negotiated AS number to detect flapping BGP sessions, and would watch per-peer accepted/advertised prefix counts to catch route leaks or unexpected withdrawal storms. Because no object list was available here, this description is based on the standard's known scope rather than named objects in this batch.

What Can Be Monitored

  • BGP peer session state
  • peer AS number
  • accepted/advertised prefix counts
  • route/path attributes

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using bgp4V2PeerInUpdates OID:

Select a Brocade/Foundry FastIron router/Layer 3 switch (BGP4 v2) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type bgp4V2PeerInUpdates into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of BGP UPDATE messages received on this connection. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
