Category: Domain: Storage, Vendor: EqualLogic/Dell

Description: Monitors ExaGrid deduplication and backup appliance system health, replication, and storage capacity.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is EXAGRID-MIB?

EXAGRID-MIB is the vendor-specific SNMP module for ExaGrid Systems' disk-based backup and deduplication storage appliances, used in backup and data-protection infrastructure. It exposes storage capacity metrics such as landing space and retention space configured/available in gigabytes, backup data space consumed, and appliance-specific event/trap parameters. Administrators rely on it to monitor hardware and software status of the appliance, primarily tracking available storage capacity, data-retention headroom, and generating traps for capacity or backup-related events, though it exposes less general hardware-sensor detail (temperature, fans) than some platforms. It does not appear to formally depend on external standard MIBs beyond the base SNMPv2 framework. It is typically deployed in backup environments alongside backup software to monitor the health and capacity of ExaGrid deduplication appliances. Engineers can download the EXAGRID-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in EXAGRID-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ExaGrid backup storage appliances

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll egLandingSpaceAvailableWholeGigabytes and egRetentionSpaceAvailableWholeGigabytes to see how much landing-zone and long-term retention space remains before backups start failing due to full disks. Comparing egBackupDataSpaceConsumedWholeGigabytes against egBackupDataAvailableWholeGigabytes over time reveals deduplication efficiency trends. The exagridTraps notification group (using egEventParams) would fire when configured space thresholds are approached, alerting operations staff to add capacity or accelerate retention grooming.

What Can Be Monitored

  • landing space available/configured
  • retention space available/configured
  • backup data space consumed
  • backup data available
  • capacity/event traps
